As the 2020-2021 water year winds down, nearly all weather stations in Southern California are tracking significantly below average season totals with only one month remaining before the measuring period ends.

In the WeatherCurrents network, all currently active WeatherCurrents stations (excluding ones with incomplete data or missing days) have failed to reach or exceed 10 inches of rainfall for the 2020-2021 rainy season as of May 31. The last time this occurred was during the even drier 2017-2018 water year. WeatherCurrents stations are currently recording between 35 and 60 percent of seasonal averages, with the notable exception of East Hemet - where its current season total of 9.02 inches is not only the highest in the network but is largely due to a single heavy thunderstorm that dumped 1.35 inches of rain at that location on August 18th, 2020. In South Temecula, where precipitation records date back to 2000, the 2020-2021 rainy season is currently the third-driest season on record there - with only the 2001-2002 and 2006-2007 seasons being drier. Temecula's current season total of 5.54 inches is only 43 percent of the 20-year average there. At most other WeatherCurrents stations, current season totals are similar or slightly higher than their 2017-2018 counterparts.

WeatherCurrents contributors are encouraged to submit their season totals for the 2020-2021 season at that time, and we will include them in our story along with their respective credits.
