Storm could bring widespread rainfall this weekend into Monday

By Reginald Stanley. Posted January 20, 2024, 10:45 AM.

Rain is expected across the region Saturday as a trough of low pressure moves inland across California this afternoon and evening, with an even wetter, colder wave of precipitation possible Monday.

Skies became increasingly cloudy overnight ahead of the storm, however the lower levels of the atmosphere were generally too dry to support precipitation reaching the ground in most cases. Rain chances become more widespread and significant Saturday afternoon as dense waves of precipitation move into the region. This first shortwave will be quite warm, keeping snow levels around 7,000 feet above sea level before dropping to around 6,500 feet Saturday night. Projected storm totals for the coasts and valleys are between 0.5 and 0.75 inches for through Sunday. A colder, potentially wetter period is forecast for Monday and Monday night, with convection capable of producing heavy rainfall and even isolated thunderstorms. Precipitation amounts for Monday are considerably more variable, with totals between 0.75 and 1.75 inches predicted across the inland valleys. Residual showers may persist into Tuesday as the system exits east.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the San Bernardino Mountains from 10 PM Saturday through 1 PM Sunday, above 6,500 feet.
