Storm Totals: April 4th-5th, 2024

By Reginald Stanley. Posted April 6, 2024, 7:34 PM.

A cold late-season Pacific storm brought chilly temperatures, gusty winds, scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms to the region late Thursday and Friday.

The cold nature of the storm brought low snow levels, approximately in the 3500-3700 FT range Friday. Daytime temperatures remained abnormally cold across inland areas, mainly in the 40s and low 50s. Some eastern portions of the inland valleys reported hail Friday afternoon. Storm totals were generally on the lighter side compared to previous storms, although all locations in the WeatherCurrents network did receive measurable rainfall, mostly under 1/4 inch. Lake Elsinore was the wettest location with 0.28 inches, followed closely by French Valley with 0.26 inches. WeatherCurrents stations in East Hemet, San Jacinto, Riverside (Orangecrest), and Pinon Hills each recorded 0.14 inches, representative of the storm's average across the region. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, 0.17 inches was reported (courtesy of Jim Sappington). South Temecula received the lowest total with only 0.07 inches, while Simi Valley to the northwest did not fare much better with 0.09 inches. Anza and Pinon Hills both received snow on Friday, which did not melt until the following day.

Southern California is looking dry through the middle of next week under high pressure, although a passing trough to our north is forecast to bring offshore flow to inland areas and the deserts on Monday. This system is moisture-starved and precipitation chances are very small. Another trough approaching Southern California and northern Baja California may bring precipitation chances late next week.
