Late Summer Storm Sputters Inland

Posted September 23, 2007, 9:56 PM.

A cutoff low produced scattered showers across the region Thursday through its exit Sunday.

Although up to half an inch of rainfall was predicted, most areas received significantly less, and the amounts widely varied. Among WeatherCurrents stations, De Luz led the way with 0.22". Murrieta was next with 0.18", Sun City and Riverside received 0.11", Lake Elsinore 0.10" and Fallbrook 0.10", Temecula got 0.09", Perris 0.04", San Jacinto 0.03", and Hemet received the least rainfall with 0.02".

An initial sputtering of rainfall on Thursday was followed by more on Saturday morning. Most areas received more on Saturday than Thursday.

A narrow band of rainfall did hit eastern Los Angeles and Orange counties, however, leading to mudslides and some severe thunderstorms.

In Riverside and San Diego counties, the westernmost communities generally received more rainfall (De Luz, Murrieta), and the easternmost the least (Hemet, San Jacinto, Perris).

This was a classic Pacific storm, occurring unusually early in the season. Most summer rainfall in Southern California is due to monsoonal or tropical influences, and often comes in the form of thunderstorms.
