A cold low pressure system swept into Southern California throughout Tuesday, bringing scattered showers and, in some cases, thunderstorms to parts of the region Tuesday evening.

Tuesday began cool and cloudy west of the mountains - an abrupt change from the warm, sunny weather the region had been experiencing in the preceding days. Light showers fell in parts of the region Tuesday morning and afternoon, before a more significant band of heavier rainfall swept across the inland valleys late Tuesday evening. The Temecula Valley and its vicinity, as well as some of the eastern valleys, experienced thunderstorms and bursts of heavy rainfall Tuesday evening - with reports of hail, lightning and thunder near Temecula - along with gusty winds. Storm totals ranged from 0.42 inches in northwest Murrieta, to 0.04 inches in south Fallbrook. Anza's total of 0.01 inch may not be accurate due to possible snowfall at that location, with the station having gone offline at midnight Wednesday for unspecified reasons. WeatherCurrents' station in Pinon Hills also experienced snowfall, where the snowmelt translated into precipitation Wednesday morning. WeatherCurrents' station in Simi Valley did not record any measurable precipitation. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, a total of 0.31 inches was reported (courtesy of Jim Sappington) along with lightning, thunder and hail late Tuesday evening. The storm quickly cleared out late Tuesday night, leaving a cold airmass in its wake. Santa Ana Winds were forecast to return to the region Thursday, before another trough brings a chance of showers early next week. Timing and intensity are uncertain as of this writing.
