Triangle Complex Fire near Corona Blackens Over 10,000 Acres Saturday and Sunday

Posted November 16, 2008, 10:36 AM.

What started as at least two fires (the Freeway Fire and Landfill Fire) on Saturday morning is now one large wildfire (Triangle Complex) burning in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, near the 91 Freeway in the Santa Ana River Canyon.

As of early Sunday morning, 10,475 acres had been burned, and 64 buildings had been destroyed (which includes 104 residences).

It was unclear how many of the burned acres were in Riverside County, although a report from the Orange County Fire Authority stated that 16 residences had been destroyed near Green River. The fire had primarily burned along the Santa Ana River west of the Prado Dam.

Structures were also reported destroyed in Yorba Linda and Anaheim.

Evacuation areas included portions of Brea, the Carbon Canyon area of Chino Hills, Savi Ranch in Anaheim Hills, Feather River and Golden Ridge in the Deane Homes development in western Corona, and portions of Yorba Linda.

600 firefighters were fighting the fire, which was only 5% contained. Assets against the blaze included 12 air tankers and 18 helicopters. Six minor firefighter injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service had extended a red flag warning through 4pm Sunday. Dry, windy conditions and near-record temperatures contributed to the spread of the fire. Santa Ana winds were expected to fade somewhat through Sunday, although dry conditions and heat continued to be predicted for another couple of days.

The Freeway Fire began in the 9am hour Saturday morning.
