Unsettled weather to continue Wednesday; Drier and windier weather to follow

By Reginald Stanley. Posted January 7, 2026, 2:46 AM.

One more round of wet weather is possible across parts of the region for Wednesday, as an upper low passes to the south of the region overnight.

Shower chances are mainly focused on San Diego County, with lower chances for Orange and Riverside Counties, while areas further north likely to remain dry. Doppler radar imagery is showing shower activity off of Southern California's coast early Wednesday morning (mostly near San Clemente Island), and is approaching San Diego County's coastline and eastern mountains. Some computer forecast models suggest shower activity west of the mountains for Sunday afternoon, however, this is mostly limited to San Diego County. Projected storm totals are expected to be no more than 0.1-0.2 inches across San Diego County, with lower amounts for Orange and Riverside counties.

Gusty onshore winds are in the forecast for the mountains Thursday as a fast-moving "inside slider" trough passes over the region, prompting a series of High Wind warnings and advisories to be issued for the mountains and deserts. From Friday and going into the weekend, developing high pressure is forecast to bring warmer, drier weather to the region, with periodic Santa Ana Winds returning to the region going into next week.
