Storm Totals: December 12th-13th, 2014 (updated)

By Reginald Stanley. Posted December 14, 2014, 10:55 AM.

A major Pacific storm with subtropical moisture delivered widespread heavy rainfall to the region Friday, with residual showers affecting some communities early Saturday.

Rain amounts from the storm ranged from as high as 2.43 inches in Simi Valley, to just 0.40 inches in Anza. Out of nineteen WeatherCurrents stations, only 3 of them recorded storm totals that did not exceed 1 inch. Nearly all other stations recorded between 1 and 2 inches of rain from the storm, as predicted for those areas. San Bernardino and Simi Valley both recorded amounts of over 2 inches from the storm. Jurupa Valley was not functioning during the storm, and the rain gauge at Lake Elsinore is still down. Borrowed totals from nearby stations were substituted for Lake Elsinore and Jurupa Valley.

The rain was heaviest as the squall line associated with the storm moved through the Southern California Friday morning. That afternoon, showers behind the main storm front continued to bring widespread heavy downpours into Friday evening. Snow levels remained slightly higher than expected, mainly above 6,200 feet above sea level. All remaining moisture had cleared out of the region by Saturday afternoon.

The storm was the second major storm of the 2014-15 water year so far. An El Niño has formed in the equatorial Pacific, and has some potential to bring wet weather to California in the coming months. However, the El Niño is weak, lowering the chances of a wet winter. Seasonal rainfall-to-date is currently above normal for the region, largely due to this months storms.
