Diminishing Santa Ana Winds and cloudy skies dominated Thursday, with some virga from the clouds reaching the ground Thursday afternoon and dampening much of the region with light amounts of rainfall.
This shower activity occurred despite the low humidities and dew points present across the region, as well as a very dry lower atmosphere. All active WeatherCurrents stations recorded measurable precipitation by Thursday night, with the exception of Simi Valley to the northwest. Where rain was observed, totals were very light, mostly falling under 0.1 inch. Pinon Hills was noticeably wetter with a total of 0.19 inches. This shower activity followed what was a very dry, windy December to-date. A low pressure system moving into California late Sunday night and into Monday has the potential to bring significant rain, the region's first since early November. The exact timing and intensity of the storm remains uncertain as of Thursday evening, however the National Weather Service is showing more confidence in recent forecast discussions regarding precipitation totals - between 0.30 and 0.70 inches in the valleys, with locally higher amounts in the mountains. Snow levels are expected to begin at around 5,500 feet above sea level.
