Storm Totals: December 27th-28th, 2021

By Reginald Stanley. Posted December 31, 2021, 4:59 AM.

A cold trough brought unsettled weather and mountain snow to the region on Monday and Tuesday this week, with the majority of precipitation falling on Monday, while Tuesday featured colder temperatures.

The majority of WeatherCurrents stations recorded totals between 0.2 and 0.4 inches by the end of Tuesday. An exceptionally wet total of 2.64 inches fell in East Highland (courtesy of Peter Michas), with the majority of the precipitation falling under a stalled heavy band of rainfall affecting the foothills of the San Bernardino mountains there on Monday. In the WeatherCurrents network, Moreno Valley recorded the highest total with 0.62 inches - an atypical occurrence, given that Moreno Valley usually records lower totals during most winter storms like most eastern valley locations. This was attributed to a cluster of heavy showers that formed over the area Monday evening, which failed to affect nearby stations in Perris and San Jacinto, although Riverside (Orangecrest) did observe a minor boost in rainfall during that time as well. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, 0.27 inches was reported (courtesy of Jim Sappington), closely mirroring totals recorded in most parts of the nearby Temecula Valley. On the drier side of the storm included Perris and San Jacinto, where 0.19 inches was recorded. Pinon Hills was the only WeatherCurrents station that failed to record any measurable rainfall on both Monday and Tuesday.

Tuesday featured less precipitation at nearly all locations, however colder temperatures were observed as many WeatherCurrents stations failed to break out of the mid-to-upper 40s for their daily high temperatures that day, while others peaked in the low 50s. More precipitation followed from another storm system beginning on Wednesday.
