Flood Watch issued as potentially significant storm approaches

By Reginald Stanley. Posted March 29, 2024, 4:05 PM.

The National Weather Service has issued a number of storm-related warnings and advisories for Southern California as an incoming low pressure system from the Pacific takes aim at the region this weekend.

The storm is forecast to bring heavy rain, wind, and isolated thunderstorms to the region on Saturday, with more showery activity following on Sunday in the immediate wake of the low's passage. Projected storm totals across the inland valleys and coasts are expected to be high and widespread, with all areas west of the mountains forecast to exceed at least one inch of rainfall. While most inland communities are forecast to receive between 1 and 1.5 inches, some wetter locations could receive up to two inches of rainfall. Heavy snowfall is predicted for the mountains, particularly above 6000 feet. Snow levels may lower to approximately 5000 feet above sea level on Sunday as colder air moves in. This will be a widespread event, as even both the high and low deserts are expected to receive modest rainfall. The storm's impact on the region will be greatest on Saturday, however post-frontal showers may still pop up on Sunday, especially as daytime surface heating increases the potential for convective showers.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for western Riverside County, southwestern San Bernardino County, as well as the Los Angeles basin - through Sunday afternoon. Winter Storm Warnings and advisories were issued for the mountains above 5000 feet through Sunday afternoon. Wind advisories were issued across a much broader portion of Southern California through mid-day Saturday as gusty southwest winds sweep across the region.
