Wednesday Thunderstorms Douse Inland Valleys; More Friday?

Posted June 4, 2009, 6:19 AM.

A rare June thunderstorm brought lightning, thunder, some rain and hail to the inland valleys Thursday morning.

Most of the action was in the 11am hour, with rainfall reported in Riverside, Temecula, Murrieta, Fallbrook, Menifee, San Jacinto, De Luz and Perris.

Pea-sized hail was reported in northwestern Murrieta, Fallbrook, and De Luz, and likely occurred elsewhere.

Measurable rain also fell later in the afternoon in Hemet, Temecula and Perris.

Some drops of rainfall occurred as early as 5am in Sun City, then again between 8am and 9am, according to a report.

Temecula recorded the most rainfall Thursday with 0.15". The Canonita area of South Fallbrook got 0.07", according to R.C. Blankenhorn. WeatherCurrents' Perris station received 0.06".

At Canyon Crest in Riverside, the rain total was only 0.01". Many WeatherCurrents locations, including Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Wildomar, Moreno Valley, and Fallbrook, did not receive measurable rainfall.

The same cutoff low that produced Wednesday's thunderstorms could generate some more on Friday as it comes ashore. Chances for rainfall on Friday were between 20% and 25% for the inland valleys as of Thursday morning, with only light rainfall amounts predicted, if any. Drizzle or showers were possible through Saturday evening as unstable air moves through the region.

Thanks to Katy Parkhurst, Darryl Medley, R.C. Blankenhorn, and Steve Rhodes, who contributed to this report.
