'May Gray' shows up early, and will stay a while

Posted April 18, 2011, 1:25 PM.

After a warm few days, deep marine layer has settled into the region, and it won't be leaving anytime soon.

A series of low pressure systems this week will keep the marine layer more robust than it usually is this time of year. Skies will be overcast or partly cloudy in the inland valleys of Southern California today, and the pattern isn't really expected to let up until next weekend.

Afternoon temperatures will meander around in the middle 60's to middle 70's all week, depending on the community. The communities around the Elsinore Convergence (Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Menifee, Perris and Hemet) were expected to be the warmest. Areas closest to the coast (De Luz and Fallbrook) will be the coolest.

Normally, this type of weather is typical for late May or June.

The periods of cloudy skies this week come with a wind advisory for the mountains and deserts, where gusts could reach upwards of 50 mph.

Although sunshine is predicted to peek through the clouds at times, a gradual reprieve from the gloomy weather should come by next weekend, as the marine layer thins. Skies will turn mostly sunny (as opposed to partly cloudy) during the day, and temperatures will begin to tick upwards again.
