On a warm New Year's Day, Temecula the warmest in the nation

By John C. Toman. Posted January 1, 2012, 10:11 PM.

2012 was greeted with warm temperatures in Southern California's inland valleys, including the warm spot in the nation: Temecula.

Data from WeatherCurrents' Temecula station, like 14 others in the network, is fed automatically to the National Weather Service.

On this day, Temecula was listed as the warmest in the nation, registering 89°F for New Year's Day. Further to the south, El Cajon, in San Diego County, also registered 89°F, but Temecula received the nod for the warm spot. The NWS daily data is collected here; the warmest and coldest locations are listed at the bottom of the page.

Predictions earlier in the day were for some inland locations to record in the lower 90's, but that didn't happen. Other locations with notable temperatures were: Lake Elsinore, Wildomar and Riverside (87°F), De Luz (86°F), French Valley and Menifee (85°F).

Sunday's temperatures were between 15 and 20 degrees above normal for this time of year.

More warm days are predicted through Wednesday as high pressure continues to impact the area.
