Some "June Gloom" and Strong Mountain Winds

By Jim Purpura. Posted June 4, 2012, 9:59 AM.

Seems like the month just started and already the aptly-named "June Gloom" is here.

Persistent low pressure is the cause. An area of low pressure is anchored up near the Washington/British Columbia border, on the coast, where it's going to stay for the rest of the wek. In the meantime, the low will push a trough along the California coast.

The combination will lead to typical "June Gloom" across the region, especially Monday and Tuesday. During this time of the year, under these weather conditions, it can stay cloudy all day near the coast (in Ventura, LA, Orange, and San Diego Counties), but for the Inland Empire the clouds usually break up by late morning and reform early in the evening.

Temperatures will remain pleasant for late spring, with highs mostly in the 70's in Simi Valley, and between the 70's and 80's elsewhere inland. Lows will be in the 50's.

Also of note will be the strong winds in the mountains and deserts this afternoon and Tuesday. Look for southwest to west wind 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. There will be isolated gusts to 65 mph in the Coachella Valley in the east end of the Banning Pass.

The western inland valleys will be breezy as well, but gusts should stay below 25-30 mph.
