A low pressure system off Baja California sent a wave of thunderstorms across the region yesterday.

Most of the thunderstorm activity took place from approximately 1:15 AM through the early afternoon Wednesday. During the early morning hours, persistent thunderstorms were present from Fallbrook and De Luz into the Temecula Valley, some of them being particularly heavy. Later in the day, a cluster of thunderstorms moved into the Pomona Valley, hitting the Riverside and San Bernardino metro areas. The eastern valleys were affected as well. Hail was reported in the Temecula Valley early Wednesday morning.

Rainfall distribution from this system was more selective than usual. The affected areas were the Inland Empire and northern San Diego County. Communities that shared the same thunderstorms received nearly identical amounts of rainfall. In general, most recorded rainfall was between 1/3 and 2/3 of an inch. One notable exception was in northeast Temecula, where Michael Mojarro reported 1.38"  citing several downpours at 3:30 AM and 12:30 PM. In contrast, Lake Elsinore recorded only .01" .

WeatherCurrents stations in San Diego's City Heights and Simi Valley did not record any rainfall. The rain gauge at our site in Anza is not functioning correctly, and we will use manual rain gauge reports instead for the time being until a replacement rain gauge is installed.
