Wettest April on record across the region

By Reginald Stanley. Posted May 1, 2020, 11:56 PM.

A six-day stormy period between April 6 and April 11 brought copious amounts of rainfall to the region, adding to an already wet Spring and setting rainfall records for the month of April region-wide.

In Temecula, where precipitation records date back to 2000, April 2020 was the wettest such month on record - with 6.22 inches recorded there. That record was previously held by April 2006, when 2.28 inches had been recorded in Temecula. Temecula's monthly total of 6.22 inches was over 600 percent of normal for April. Similarly, WeatherCurrents' station in Murrieta recorded 4.71 inches in April. Records for Murrieta date back to 2003. A monthly total of 5.51 inches was recorded in Hemet, the wettest on record for that station. Likewise, all active WeatherCurrents stations recorded their wettest Aprils on record, a record unlikely to fall in any given year. A single, persistent cutoff low pressure system was largely responsible for the rainfall early in the month.

The weather pattern switched from cool and damp early in the month to hot and dry later in the month. No additional rainfall is in the forecast, however much of the region has entered above-average seasonal rainfall in light of the wet weather since March. Most WeatherCurrents stations are seeing season totals for 2019-2020 that are very close to those of 2018-2019.
