Microburst hits parts of Riverside County Tuesday afternoon

By Reginald Stanley. Posted September 16, 2014, 5:21 PM.

A microburst formed Tuesday afternoon about six miles southwest of Diamond Valley Lake, near the community of Winchester, at roughly 1:30 PM before spawning multiple others and slowly moving west. This was accompanied by a gust front, which stirred winds up to 40MPH across the Temecula Valley. The skies quickly grew dark in the northern part of the Temecula Valley, in spite of blistering triple-digit heat earlier in the day.

The microburst became particularly severe upon reaching the Elsinore Convergence Zone, where it also became stationary for nearly two hours. Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Murrieta and Menifee were all affected. Heavy rain, thunder, and lightning were all reported extensively. In the hardest hit areas of Wildomar and Lake Elsinore, street flooding, fallen trees and downed power lines have been reported.

Temperatures plummeted in all the affected areas, most notably Wildomar, where the temperature dropped from a high of 106.5 degrees at 1:59 PM to 67.3 degrees at 3:19 PM - a temperature drop of nearly 40 degrees in less than two hours, and lower than the overnight temperature there. Wildomar was also hardest hit out of all nineteen WeatherCurrents stations - 1.97 inches has been recorded there, as of 5:00 PM Tuesday.

Not far behind, Anza was hit by a different thunderstorm shortly after noon. 1.90 inches was recorded there. Rain was also recorded in De Luz, Fallbrook, Temecula, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, and Menifee - but all less than 2/10 of an inch so far, respectively. Rain was also reported in El Cariso in the Santa Ana Mountains, as well as in San Diego.

The small chance of thunderstorms remain in the forecast through Thursday night. Please visit the National Weather Service - San Diego website for warnings, watches and advisories.
