Outlook: February probably drier, cooler than normal

Posted February 2, 2011, 2:05 PM.

The latest outlooks from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center have been issued, and they show lower than normal rainfall probabilities and temperatures, lasting through the rest of the winter.

The graphics show a 33% chance of cooler than normal February weather, and a 33-40% chance of below normal February precipitation.

On average, February is usually the wettest month of the year in Southern California.

The precipitation outlook in particular continues to be influenced by a moderately strong La Nina condition in the equatorial Pacific. Sea surface temperatures there have been running about 1.5°C below normal.

Rainfall has run wetter than normal up until this past month. Cooler than normal weather, a regular feature for much of last year, also was interrupted by a warmer pattern in January.

Here's what's normal for the month of February, by community:

Location Precip. High
De Luz 3.14"  64°F
Fallbrook 3.99"  66°F
Hemet 3.10"  64°F
Lake Elsinore 3.86"  68°F

Murrieta 2.66"  67°F
Riverside 1.52"  69°F
