Potential Storm Could Bring Light Showers or Thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday

Posted May 4, 2008, 1:07 PM.

A storm system is predicted to track south from Northern California along the coast and drift inland Monday night may bring a slight chance of light showers and thunderstorms in addition to clouds to the region.

The effects of the system are difficult to predict, but should include a deepening of the marine layer, to between 3,000 and 3,500 feet Sunday night and perhaps again Monday night.

The chance of showers is currently expected to be highest in San Diego county, near where the storm is expected to drift east Monday night. The timing for the highest chance of showers is Monday night and Tuesday morning.

The low pressure system is a cutoff low.

A "cutoff low" is a type of low pressure system that is displaced from the prevailing current, according to the National Weather Service definition. Cutoff lows are common occurrence in west coast weather, where they get disconnected from the jet stream and drift.
